August 6,2013 Meeting Minutes


1)      GOAL

a)      Basic Crime prevention

b)      Disaster preparedness

i)        Neighborhood watch signs

ii)       Street lights in suggested area’s that are too dark

iii)     Plan community events (examples: Safety night and national night out).

iv)     Start up block house, which is like helping hands

2)      Importance of block captains to help inform neighbors on what is going on and to get non-emergency issues for their area.  Ideally 1 captain to every 10-15 houses.

3)      We are on Facebook for those who can’t make it to meetings and to voice opinions, ideas.  If you have any concerns please contact a captain, leader or Deputy Schmidt.

4)      Observation sheet for your reference when calling in a report or to have on file for ongoing issues you are having.

5)      Issues brought up:

a)      Trash burning

b)      Suspicious behavior in public areas

c)       Kids out past curfew unsupervised

i)        Curfew is 10 pm during the weekdays and 11 pm on weekends.

6)      Deputy Schmitt went over how to prevent your car from being broken into.

a)      Take out valuables.

b)      Lock car.

c)       Never leave car unattended while running.

d)      Park in a well lit area.

e)      Don’t give criminals clues

i)        Examples: remove GPS mounts, phone chargers, etc.

f)       Trust your instincts.

g)      Don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1 if you think something is suspicious

7)      Yellow Dot

i)        Put yellow dot sticker in the back of the car window

ii)       Fill out form for every member in the house and put it in glove box.

iii)     If you are in an accident first response teams know to look in the glove box for identity of the people in the car and medical history (example: blood type and allergies).

8)      Deputy Harl did a power point on identity theft.  Reports state there are tillions of dollars lost to Identity theft. Some key points are:

a)      Low tech methods

i)        Trash pulling/ dumpster diving

ii)       Purse snatching

iii)     Phone scams: current issue is people calling claiming they are from a financial institute having an issue with your account needing your private information.

(1)    Scammers can be using tools to make their number look like a 800#

iv)     Internet scams

b)      High tech methods

i)        Credit card skimmers

(1)    Placed on front of ATMS, cashiers and wait staff can have hand held devices.

ii)       Pin hole cameras

(1)    Placed on ATMS to see your pin number

c)       Ways to prevent Identity theft

i)        Jiggle the card reader prior to putting your key in a machine.

ii)       Feel for bumps and ridges on card readers

iii)     Card not going in smoothly

iv)     Make sure you are using a secure web site it should read https not http if you are going on a site where they need personal info or you are lokoking at financial information.

v)      Make sure your internet security is encrypted.

vi)     Secure network

vii)   Don’t look at sensitive material on a public network.

viii)  Check credit report.  Each credit agency gives you a free report yearly.

(1)    Rotate requesting a reports every three months.

ix)     Balance your accounts

xiv) Make small transactions through ATMS at night and leave the large transactions for the morning.

xv)   Remove hard drive after selling or recycling your old computer

(1)    Checks can be easily duplicated and forged

xvii) Call police as soon as you notice someone using your information

(1) They can work with the local police in any jurisdiction where the crime is taking place

xviii) Don’t click links to websites through your email incase of phishing scam.
