Weekend Grab Bag: From Ribfest to July 4 Celebrations

What fun will you pull out this weekend and beyond? Local events abound in Patch lands of Montgomery, Oswego, Yorkville.

Friday

Ribfest, Knoch Park, Naperville
 

The Scoop: This popular four-day festival draws great musical acts and great food. Runs through Monday. It's not in Montgomery, but Montgomery Gentry plays on Sunday.
Inside Info: REO Speedwagon, Styx, Grand Funk Railroad and Bruce Hornsby perform this year. Check out the website for full details and music schedule.

Oswego High School

The Scoop: The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. and showcase nine performing world-class drum corps from all over the Midwest.
Inside Info:  More than 3,000 fans are expected to attend.  Proceeds benefit the Susan M. Kiley Memorial Scholarship Fund which awards four $2,400 scholarship annually to selected graduating seniors from the Oswego School District attending Waubonsee Community College.

Saturday

, 301 N. Bridge St., Yorkville

The Scoop: Yorkville's outdoor market starts Thursday and continues on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon through Oct. 29.
Inside Info: Offerings will include farm grown vegetables, baked goods and fresh roasted coffee.

 

Saturday Morning Stories, Oswego Public Library, Montgomery Branch


The Scoop: Ages 2 to 6 are welcome to join in for some reading fun. Free. 10 a.m.

Civil War in Aurora, Tanner Museum, 305 Cedar St., Aurora


The Scoop: This holiday weekend, step back 150 years as the Aurora Historical Society presents a living Civil War weekend at the 1857 Tanner House Museum. Music of the period, dramatic presentations, daily life in the 1860s, tours and children’s activities. $7 for adults, $5 for students, children under 7 free. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Inside Info: Highlights will be movie and TV actor (and native son) Phillip Van Lear proclaiming from the works of abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Comfort Zone BBQ available for purchase. 

Sunday

Oswego Country Market, 15 Main St., downtown Oswego
The Scoop: Every Sunday through September, this fresh-air market is filled with locally grown produce, meat, eggs, fresh flowers, specialty food items and more. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Civil War in Aurora Cont., Tanner Museum, 305 Cedar St., Aurora

The Scoop: Continuation of life in the late 1800s re-created by the Aurora Historical Society. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Monday

, Town Square Park, Yorkville

The Scoop: A day of fun and celebration! Performances by the Yorkville Community Band and the American Legion and free rides in Town Square Park, food, a parade and fireworks to top it all off. 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Inside Info: The fireworks display promises to please as it honors the 50th year of the Bristol Kendall Firemen's Association serving as hosts.

4th of July Parade, downtown Aurora


The Scoop: A patriotic ceremony will begin the festivities at 9:15 a.m. outside the Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd. The parade will step off at 10 a.m. at the corner of Benton and River streets.
Inside Info: Father Jerome “Jerry” Leake, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in Aurora, has been named the 2011 Fourth of July Parade grand marshal.

Fireworks, IMSA, Aurora

The Scoop: Festivities start at 6 p.m. Fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
Inside Info: Lawn chairs and small hand-held coolers are permitted at the fireworks festivities. Shuttle bus service is also available. 

, Prairie Point Park, Oswego

The Scoop: Oswego's annual fireworks show returns, presented by Mad Bomber. 9:30 p.m.
Inside Info: Spectators should use the parking lots of Eastview Elementary School, Traughber Junior High School, Prairie Point Elementary School and Oswego High School for good views.
