Relay for Life Kickoff Event This Saturday

The American Cancer Society begins its Oswego/Montgomery campaign with an open house at Oswego Presbyterian Church.

Last year, participants in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Oswego/Montgomery raised about $125,000. That money went straight into helping those suffering from cancer, and to funding research, to try to stamp the disease out entirely.

This year, the Fox Valley chapter of the ACS is hoping to beat even that total.

The Oswego/Montgomery Relay for Life campaign officially begins Saturday with a kickoff event from 4-7 p.m. at Oswego Presbyterian Church, 1976 Route 25 in Oswego.

This year’s relay is scheduled for June 24-25, at Oswego High School.

Those interested in the Relay for Life can come enlist—signing up a team will be free on Saturday, but will cost $25 anytime after that, according to Maggie Kluck, senior income development representative with the ACS.

If you show up Saturday, you can also get a bowl of soup for a $1 donation.

The goal of the event, Kluck said, is to get people engaged in the campaign, and excited about helping out the American Cancer Society. The organization offers support to cancer survivors, holds health fairs to educate people on the causes of cancer, and through its Cancer Action Network, advocates for more research funding.

This will be the eighth Relay for Life held in the Oswego/Montgomery area. Last year’s relay drew more than 500 participants, Kluck said.
