Oswego Girl is Jersey Mike's 'Citizen of the Month'

Meredith Winn has raised more than $3,200 toward her $5,000 goal to fight children's cancer.

Since December, 10-year-old Meredith Winn has been hard at work raising money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. The fourth-grader plans to get her head shaved during an assembly later this month at her Oswego school.

Her efforts haven't gone unnoticed, garnering praise from the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which profiled the Southbury Elementary School Student on its website, writing, "With the hard work of volunteers and shavees like Meredith, maybe by that time we will already have found a cure."

Now, the Oswego girl is being recognized by a local restaurant.

On Tuesday, Meredith was officially named Jersey Mike's "Citizen of the Month" for her work raising money to fight children's cancer. The Oswego student has been collecting money at school and going door-to-door to support St. Baldrick's. She's even created a video to help the cause.

Meredith got her picture taken with staff at Jersey Mikes, 2428 Route 34, and will be featured on the restaurant's community board. She also received some coupons, according to a rep for Jersey Mike's.

On March 21, Meredith will get her head shaved during a Character Counts assembly at Southbury Elementary. The fourth-grader said she is taking part in the fundraiser in honor of her friend Luke, who died of cancer.
