Kevin Sings the News: 'These Excuses'

Patch's troubadour Kevin Trudo rounds up a week of news in a jazzy tune that reminds us to work on being better people.

This is Kevin Sings the News. That guy in the video up there? He’s Patch troubadour Kevin Trudo, and each week, he writes and sings an original song based on the headlines of the past seven days.

This week, he’s thinking about our divided selves. Stories this week were an even mix of the good and the bad. On the good side, you had Oswego being named the by Money Magazine. You had a Bolingbrook man , a Lemont teen , and a new restaurant with the jolly name of .

But on the bad side, you had a over a boyfriend, some in Naperville, a man who robbed someone at RomeoFest and while making his escape, a in Plainfield, a man who to lure teens to his apartment in Naperville, a Romeoville man accused of , and worst of all, a man who allegedly to kill his father in Woodridge.

These are all parts of our nature, and we need to subdue our darker sides, Kevin says. The song he wrote out of all this is called “These Excuses,” and it’s a jaunty, jazzy thing with a bite.

And someone looks at your man all wrong
Well, you kinda need to
You can

But these excuses that we make for ourselves
They're not building up our better selves
And the bad behavior we permit ourselves
Are only bricks we lay in our own hells

Life isn't what I want it to be
I need for me
I'm terrified of grown-up life
So I'll or
Or with that thing for trimming weeds

In Lemont there's a good kid
He's going on to the
In Lemont there's another kid
He took $40 bucks and
I think it's clear which one you'd want to be

They couldn't set aside an argument
They and both got hit
And it's sad, sad, sad
It's a shame, shame, shame

But these excuses that we make for ourselves
They're not building up our better selves
And the bad behavior we permit ourselves
Are only bricks we lay in our own hells
