Illinois Senate Approves Radogno Bill to Ban Minors from Tanning Beds

The legislation, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would prohibit teens 17 and younger from using UV tanning beds.

The Illinois Senate approved legislation Tuesday that would prohibit all Illinois minors from using indoor tanning beds. Senate Bill 2244, introduced by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) in February, would ban Illinois minors age 17 and younger from UV tanning beds. Currently, minors ages 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they provide a parent's signature. Radogno said in a press release that she introduced the bill to protect Illinois minors from the serious health risks involved with indoor tanning beds. “Indoor tanning is a known carcinogen, and research shows that even a single session in a tanning bed increases the user’s chance of developing melanoma by 20 percent. Yet more than a quarter of 17-year-olds in the United …

Oswego to Enact Parking Restrictions Outside Civic Center

A residential cul-de-sac with an island will also receive parking restrictions.

Do you park your car along Ashlawn or Circle Drive West outside the Oswegoland Park District Civic Center? Not anymore. The Village of Oswego board voted unanimously to approve parking restrictions along those roads as well as a cul-de-sac in Lincoln Station upon requests from the Park District and the subdivision's Home Owner's Association.  Police Chief Dwight Baird said the Park District's request came as "it related to their operations at the civic center." Also, the restriction of parking cars along the roadway would "reduce possibility of someone darting out between cars." The no-parking restriction would only apply to Ashlawn and Circle Drive West on the park district's side of the roadway. "I do not see a big hinderance, it does …

Kane Property Tax Bills Going Up 2.29% on Average; 1st Installment Due June 3

If you got an ouch for your federal income tax return this year, you've got a little more than a month to get ready for the next sting: your Kane County property tax bill.

If taxpayers revolted in the April 9 municipal elections, you wouldn't have noticed. There were a number of exceptions, but for the most part, incumbents won the day in school board, mayoral, park board and library board races. So if you didn't vote in those races, no griping is allowed on your tax bill. (OK, we'll allow some griping, since it's the usual result of those bills that arrive in the mail on or before May 1.) Kane County Treasurer David J. Rickert has sent out the annual press release announcing the "when" and some of the "what" of your upcoming bill. The first installment will be due June 3, and the second installment Sept. 3, 2013. For those keeping track, the net value of taxable real estate in Kane County is a little more …

Brian - What eerked me was your comment "It seems to me that our taxing bodies are holding the line relative to inflation" . It is like you are so nonchalant if the taxes go up or down. Everyone else I talk to are furious, especially in Batavia being the highest taxes. You would think we lived in a white collar city. We are small blue collar town. We are loyal and true to our Fox Valley area. …   more ›

In Wake of Flood, Health Department Offers Well-Water Test Kits

After the flood of 2013, you might want to make sure your well water is safe.

After this week’s flooding, homeowners with private wells have seen their wells flood, or they have questions regarding the safety of their drinking water. If the safety of your water supply is in doubt, be sure to use bottled water for drinking, preparing food, making ice, hand washing, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing baby formula. Do not eat any food that has come in contact with the potentially contaminated water. The Kane County Health Department has specific instructions on how to disinfect a well and is providing free drinking water sample analysis kits for any wells suspected of being contaminated with coliform bacteria due to flooding. You may obtain sample bottles and instructions for disinfection of wells from the …

State of Disaster Declaration Speeds Flood Recovery for Kane County

More than 31,000 sandbags are distributed to citizen and communities from the north county line to Batavia.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen has signed off on a local disaster declaration—the first step in the process to get Kane County declared a federal disaster area. According to a Kane County press release, the sign-off opens up potential federal assistance to the citizens and municipalities affected by the flood. If federal assistance does become available for Kane County, residents federal assistance centers will be set up to aid those eligible for the assistance, Lauzen said. County officials continue to monitor the damage caused by flooding that has affected a large portion of Kane County. More than 4 inches of rain fell in less than a 24-hour period, causing the Fox River to rise 2 1/2 feet above flood stage. Much of the rain …

Gov. Quinn Declares State of Emergency

Gov. Quinn has declared a state of emergency in the wake of flooding throughout the Chicago area.

Governor Pat Quinn declared a state of emergency as state agencies prepared to provide assistance to local governments throughout northern Illinois dealing with severe river and flash flooding. The state of emergency ensures that state resources are activated and that the federal government is aware that a disaster declaration is likely. It also allows the state to request resources as needed, such as personnel and equipment. State and local emergency personnel have been on the ground in hardest hit areas since early this morning. "Heavy rainfall over the past few days has created dangerous flooding in areas across the state," Governor Quinn stated in a press release. "Everyone should stay home and off the roads if possible. To ensure …

This is absolutely ridiculous that it has taken so long to get FEMA here to assess our situation (They arrive on Monday 29 April to do an assessment). This is not due to Federal delays...it is due incompetence among the State of Illinois leadership.   more ›
