Before Frodo and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, there was another epic tale from Middle Earth. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" opens Dec. 13 and it's not too soon to figure out when you'll watch. Dirty Dan and his Cool Rockin' Daddies to raise funds for the Ridgewood United Community Food Pantry.
Get ready to rock the night away for a worthy cause. Dirty Dan and his Cool Rockin’ Daddies are partnering with the Aurora District of United Methodist Churches for a Christmas Rock Show to benefit the Ridgewood United Community Food Pantry. The Dec. 2 show will be at the historic Rialto Square Theater in Joliet. Look to the skies for some stunning light displays this November and December.
As you hang holiday lights and light holiday candles, cast your gaze upon the universe's natural fireworks, as well. A thin crescent moon in 2012 will provide for dark nights and early morning light to enhance this year's North Taurid meteor shower display that peaks early Monday, Nov. 12, according to EarthSky.org. To see the showers, look for the moon and Venus in the east. On Nov. 12, the moon will be below Venus, next to Saturn, according to EarthSky. Space.com reports the best time to see the Taurid meteors, or, "Halloween fireballs," started Nov. 5 and peaks on Monday, as the moon diminishes in brightness each night. Censorship is alive and well, as highlighted by Banned Books Week—and you might be surprised by who the most vocal challengers of books are.
The importance of the First Amendment and the concept of "intellectual freedom" might not always be readily apparent to most kids, but Banned Books Week is a great opportunity to make those lessons come alive for children—and adults. Banned Books Week is held annually during the last week of Sept. (Sept. 30-Oct. 6, 2012). The week is an occasion for libraries and bookstores across the U.S. to help folks realize just how real and ongoing a problem censorship is. The Oswego Public Library has displays at both campuses of additional information about Banned Books Week along with more popular titles for both youth and adult. Best-selling author will be interviewed about her debut novel with a book signing to follow.
Author Erin Morgenstern will be presenting her debut novel, The Night Circus, at Oswego High School this October. The Night Circus is is the Fox Valley Reads book selection for 2012. Morgenstern will be interviewed in Oswego on Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Oswego High School Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m. with a book signing to follow. Oswego High School students Thomas Mereness, junior, and Francisco Zafra, senior, each received a national scholastic award for their artwork last spring. Mereness was an American Vision Award Medalist for his work in sculpture. Zafra received a gold medal for his drawing, which will be traveling the country. Gold medals are awarded for the most outstanding works in the nation and the American Visions and Voices medal is awarded based on an esteemed panel of jurors that select the best of the five American Voices & Visions Nominees from each region to receive national recognition with the American Visions & Voices Medal.
