What do donuts, Whangdoodles and smelly gym socks have in common?

They were all part of the first Breakfast Book Chat of the year at Lakewood Creek Elementary.

The event, said fifth grade teacher Tim Harris, invites third, fourth and fifth grade students to listen to one teacher talk about a favorite book while enjoying juice and donuts.

Fourth grade teacher Nick Buono presented, “The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles,” written by famous actress Julie Andrews.

Buono described how when he was younger he read the book to his cousin, who didn’t like to read at all, with the promise of if they read some of it they could do fun activities the next day.

Buono said rather than do any of the “fun activities,” his cousin was so hooked on it that they read it all night long and during the next day as well. “You never realize the power one book can have on you,” said Buono.

Without giving away the story, Buono and a cast of fellow teachers, including Tim Harris, Caryn DeMasie and James Donaldson, acted out parts of the story, with much laughter from the 255 gathered students, and shared the message of the

“Nothing is impossible,” said Buono. “Just remember that.”

Kudos to two of the best teachers my child has ever had with Mr. Buono and Mr. Harris. These are two teachers that genuinely care about the successes of their students both in and out of the classroom. Not only are they great educators, they take time out of their weekends and summers to attend their students and former students extracurricular activities. They are two teachers that will absolutely have a lasting impact on my child's life. Keep up the great work!
