Thursday Night Standoff in Oswego Ends Peacefully

Police blocked off Grove Road at Reservation Road for three hours while they attempted to negotiate with an Oswego man refusing to exit a camper. The man was wanted on a failure to appear warrant related to more than a dozen prior charges.

A three-hour standoff on Grove Road in Oswego Thursday night ended peacefully with an Oswego man taken into custody on a Kendall County warrant, Oswego police said.

That warrant was issued on July 5 for failing to appear for a status hearing on more than a dozen charges, according to Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis.  Ryan Hairgrove, 30, of the 0-99 block of North Adams Street in Oswego, did come to the courthouse on July 5, Weis said, but left before his cases were called.

Oswego Police Detective Rob Sherwood said officers received information that Hairgrove was traveling in a camper seen leaving the area, and stopped that vehicle on Grove Road near Reservation Road around 5 p.m.

The driver of the camper told police that Hairgrove was inside, and had no intentions of coming out, Sherwood said. Police blocked off Grove Road at Reservation Road and set up a perimeter around the camper, attempting to negotiate with Hairgrove, Sherwood said.

Eventually, around 8 p.m., the department’s Special Response Team was sent in. They used a canister of tear gas to force Hairgrove from the camper, and took him into custody peacefully, Sherwood said. No one was hurt in the standoff or its aftermath, he said.

Hairgrove was charged with resisting a peace officer and obstructing a peace officer, the latest in a long line of criminal charges.

His most recent prior charges were aggravated fleeing a police officer and criminal damage to government property in May of this year, according to Kendall County court records, but he was also charged with domestic battery and aggravated resisting a peace officer in June of last year, drunken driving in December of 2010, and domestic battery, also in December of 2010, among other charges. Weis said multiple cases were all up for the same status hearing on July 5.

Hairgrove is currently at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

He's really got a good heart. He just has some things to work on. Orchard Valley would be a good start. Everyone makes mistakes, he just needs to start learning from them.

jm and john are dumb. the state provoked this dude's dui, and his domestic battery charges? what a joke! a perfect example of someone not taking responsibility for their actions. if you guys know this piece of work, tell him to man up to his charges.

Wow! There are some awfully crabby and bitter people commenting today. Eric Weis and the police are just doing there JOB. No one forced him to commit the crimes, he did that on his own, now it is time to face the consequences of his actions. No one said he wasn't a good guy, but he made mistakes and these are the results.

Thank goodness this fool no longer lives near me. Cops were at his rental dump house just about every weekend until he was finally forced to move out a couple months ago. LANDLORDS: Please do background checks, not just credit checks on your prospective tenants!

Wow. The grammar alone by Ryan's advocates speaks volumes. You do the crime, do the time. As others have said, you can be a great guy, but if you break the law, man up. Pathetic.

google his name. He's been making bad choices for 20 years! Most folks learn from their mistakes and quit making them. Him and his riff raff lived behind me for about a year. Loud obnoxious all night parties that lasted for days, non stop drinking, fighting, countless people in and out of the shack they were living in, young teen girls, family members I guess, who lived there were exposed to the type of lifestyle this guy lives...it was horrible. And that dude has a terrible temper - I've heard him go off on what I think was his wife or at least a woman about his age who lived there.

Let's get a few things straight here...
First of all, I am a very close friend of Ryan's, he is basically family in my eyes. That being said, has Ryan made poor decisions? YES are those of us who love him upset? FOR SURE Does he need to face the consequences of his actions? YES
Now... For everyone on here making some pretty strong assumptions about his charges... He is NOT a "wife beater" as some have referred him as. #1, he's never been married!!! #2 last time I checked, domestic battery charges don't only apply to a dispute between a husband/wife, boyfriend/girlfriend or even male/female for that matter!! A domestic battery charge can be anyone in your HOUSEHOLD... Brother, uncle, father, cousin, friend living with you... This list goes on. So while he is no angel (as none of us are unless we have the messiah living in Oswego and I missed the news) lets not jump to conclusions about something like that. Being called a "wife beater" is a pretty strong allegation and for the record he isnt!
Oh, and I hope my vocabulary and spelling was up to your standards kj44... Amazing, huh? Educated people are friends with him too!! WOW
Way to judge Oswego!! Funny in this town everyone's perfect until THEIR family member is the one headlining the Patch! What a joke...

Impressive. If you are so close to him and he's "family", why haven't you tried to set him straight? I know if I had someone in my family that habitually broke the law, I would definitely either 1) interfere or 2) write them off. His list of crimes is amazing. Again, not saying he's not a nice guy or a human being. Unfortunately, he is a serial criminal. Actions speak louder than words. I hope once all is said and done, he finds peace and remorse in his actions and cleans up. It's never too late.

@Jennifer. It sounds to me that you may know Ryan hairgrove. I do not,but I would like to know are all of Ryan's charges that are brought against him false? Domestic battery, drunken driving, fleeing police, resisting arrest, failure to pay rent. Also my information shows this in not just one terrible night. These charges are all separate occasions. Yes we all make mistakes, but seriously your going to say he has a good heart. Also I only listed a few charges.

@MT, thank you and without a doubt we are here for him. It is heartbreaking for all of us having to deal with this. People need to remember everyone has people who love them... And unfair assumptions only make matters more difficult. Things like DUI & resisting are cut and dry, but it saddens me that when someone is charged with a domestic battery they are automatically labeled a "wife beater" unfortunately a lot of times that is the case but not always. People need to remember that.

@mt if you read gg79 post domestic can be done beetween anyone he has made bad life choices and yes he is going to pay for them it doesn't mean he is a horrible person by any means and quite a few of the charges occurred in one bad night stuff happens in life but he is a good person dispite what people say or think of him do all I'm trying to say is people shouldn't pass judgement if they don't know all the facts of the matter

since when has this turned into a bashing session?? YEa he has made bad choices but he is a grown man and friends and family can only to so much to try and point there loved ones in the right direction at the end of the day he is the one who made his own choices in life weather they good ones or bad so who are any of you to pass any lind of judgement on his family or friends we can oly do so much but the ultimite choice is left in his hands but regadless of what you guys may think of have read or seen he is a great friend brother, uncle and son to his family and TRUE friends

@kj44 Really? What exactly would you suggest? Obviously there has been intervention and discussion and pleading to find the right path. The fact is, he's a grown man and we can't hold his hand, chain him in a room or follow him everywhere to watch every move that is made. There has been "interference" and as far as writing him off... Nope, not what you do to people you care about. At least I don't. He has never harmed, indangered or brought any trouble into or around myself or my home so I will continue to TRY to support and guide him and pray he finds the right path. My whole point is people are passing judgement off on not only him but his friends & family. I am not ignorant nor have I EVER had more than a traffic ticket but right away anyone who defends him in someway on here is classified as his "advocates with bad grammar". I don't condone breaking the law but there are some misinterpretations and assumptions being voiced that are incorrect.

If he's such a "nice" guy why didn't he just come out of the trailer and surrender? Do you know how many sheriff personnel were at that scene? A LOT! Everyone who lives near the standoff area, trying to get home from work or wherever, had to turn around and go miles out of their way to get home, all wondering if their families were in danger. The officers would only tell us that the “Swat” team was there and we “could “ be in danger and to stay in our houses. There was so much speculation as to what the situation was. Many heard there was a hostage situation! The money he cost us taxpayers should be enough to throw him in jail! We pay in enough in taxes around here! I admire and applaud the Sherriff’s deputies and policemen for putting their lives in danger for us but they should have smoked him out way before they did!

Hey, people, I went to http://www.co.kendall.il.us/circuitclerk/eMagnus.html; as suggested and counted 60+ arrests – That’s 2 per year since the day he was born! Does this fit the definition of insanity? You know, doing the same thing over and over but expecting something different! NO that illustrates a criminal mind and it was not his parents fault unless maybe his Aunt is also his Mother who is married to his Grandfather. And there we have the new oppressed minority who deserve extra consideration and a helping hand (welfare check) from the 49% who pay taxes!
