Three Teens Killed in Semi-Truck Crash Near Oswego

Three teenagers - two from Plainfield, one from Naperville - were killed when their car collided with a semi truck on Monday afternoon, Illinois State Police have confirmed.

Updated at 10:15 a.m. June 5:

Plainfield School District 202 Community Relations Director Tom Hernandez released a statement from the district Tuesday morning.

"We extend our sincere condolences to the families of these three students. All of our students are part of the District 202 family, even after they've moved on to life after high school, and so we also grieve this loss," Hernandez said.

Alexis Banuelos, 18, was a 2011 Plainfield North High School graduate. Tyler Montgomery, 19, graduated from PNHS in 2010. Hernandez said Brian Herrera, 19, was also a former District 202 student.

Original article:

Three teenagers were killed when the car they were in collided with a semi truck on Route 126 near Oswego on Monday afternoon, Illinois State Police said.

The driver of the car, 19-year-old Brian Herrera of Plainfield, and a passenger, 19-year-old Tyler Montgomery of Plainfield, were pronounced dead on the scene, police said. A second passenger, 18-year-old Alexis Banuelos of Naperville, was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center, where she was also pronounced dead, police said.

According to police, the black Ford coupe Herrera was driving pulled out in front of a semi truck heading east on Route 126 at Schlapp Road around 3:15 p.m. The truck hit the car, and flipped onto its side, pinning the car beneath it. Paramedics needed to use extrication to get the three teens out of the car, police said.

The driver of the semi truck, 45-year-old Scott Fernatt of Hodgkins, Illinois, was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released, police said. Fernatt was subjected to a blood test, and no sign of alcohol was found, police said.

A stretch of Route 126 between Schlapp Road to the west and Ridge Road to the east remained closed late Monday night.

Check back with Patch for more details on this story as they are released.

Very sad! Cars cannot out run trucks...the truck is going the speed limit & a car pulls out in front of it from a dead stop...not going to beat it. :(
I also have a family full of truck drivers...Sad on both sides.

Let your family members know they also should obey the speed limit.. Living right off of I80 and me actually doing the 45 mph speed limit nothing like a truck right up your butt, because they don't want to obey. At least 6 semi accidents in the past 3 weeks in a 6 mile stretch, 2 of which flipped over, or lets talk about the one that happened 3 hours before this one where the truck decided to go across 3 lanes on I80 on to the opposite lanes to crash into a SUV that a mother and her newborn were in. Nothing left of the front of her vehicle. Thank god for them two being ok. So lets just not blame the passenger vehicles. Truck always in a hurry to get to their destinations, they want to make sure they get paid.

Thank you T-Bone...my daughter knows all 3 of these victims and the driver lived on my street. Regardless how the accident occured, 3 young lives have been lost. No one knows what happened exactly, so let's not speculate that anyone was at fault, but rather put our focus on the families and friends of all the victims involved! The law states that only 2 teens can ride in a car is valid for drivers age 16 and for one year after they receive their license. May they all RIP...

At 19 you can have however many passengers you wish in the car that law is for the first two years after you get your license. And how dare you take a sad horrible thing like three teenagers dieing and try turning it into something about too many kids being in a car at once. This is a horrible tragedy and if you weren't there, you don't know what caused the accident, you are simply speculating and making judgements. Three teenagers, kids, are dead. Of course I feel bad for the driver of the truck who will live with this tragedy for the rest of his life. But, he will live, and that is the important part.

His family and friends will be able to comfort him, but what comfort could their ever be for three families who've lost their children?

The insensitivity and cold-heartedness displayed by some of these comments is appalling and sickening. Save yor sympathy for the fortunate man who lived, and your comments about teen drivers, at least until these kids are buried.

Nobody was in that car with these poor kids therefore nobody really knows the cause and bottom line here people 3 children are dead and 3 families have lost their child. 126 is a wonderful road, because there are very few stop lights or signs on it. If drivers would just obey the speed limit on it, and cross traffic obey the signs, it would be a safe road. But how many new stop lights should we install now ? 126 and Grove is another problematic intersection. Much more traffic on Grove than Schlapp. When traffic gets backed up waiting to get onto 126, the cars start pulling out in front of traffic on 126, almost out of necessity. I would put the next stop light there, at the 3-way. ( pretty sure it's Grove rd. I'm referring to )

Truck drivers are aggressive drivers and need to slow down!!!!! They do not own the road and cannot bully the other cars on the road. I believe trucks should follow a speed limit 10 miles below the speed limit that a car should follow to avoid these accidents.

Oswego Resident. 3 young teens are killed because the driver of the car pulled in front of a truck. The speed limit there is 50 and unfortunetly even if the limit was 40 most likely the children would have still died. The majority of truck drivers are very safe and your comment about drivers shows your ignorance. My prayers are with the families and friends of the teens as well as the driver. Driver, please don't blame yourself. It is not your fault...

I actually drove by the accident sight last night. Can't say how fast the truck was going, but he definitely was on his brakes, HARD. I could see where he swerved of the road, with his brakes on, tearing up the ground behind him. At that time of day, it would be difficult to speed, due to rush hour traffic. Just saying.

Everyone who is speculating on whose fault it was needs to stop. You are making judgments based on the little bit of information in the article or your own personal opinions/experience. My prayers and thoughts go out to all the families and friends of these 4 people.

You people are sick for trying to push your religion and opinions on this matter while we are grieving.
Tyler was my friend. And you think it's okay to come out publicly and point fingers and sit on your high horses as if you are somehow better?
Tyler was a better person than most. And you need to keep your little comments about not paying attention and texting and speeding (all of which NONE of you have ANY idea if they occurred) and KEEP THEM TO YOURSELVES.
Imagine losing someone you love only to see completely strangers basically justifying what happened and using it as an "example for your kids". Not to mention the blatant pushing and advertising of a RELIGION.
So, please, back off and have some dignity. I hope each of you realize how disgusting and inappropriate you have acted.
I love you Tyler. So much. I wish this would not have happened. You will always be the best person that I have ever known.

It is one of the hardest things to do in life. no one should have to bury a child. and the truck driver has to live with this the rest of his life. alot of times they give up driving after an accident like this, even though they were not at fault. Thanks for sharing. It is very easy for young driver's to do, for a # of reasons. Unfortunately just a simple mistake can lead to such tragedy. Just b/c a kid makes a horrific error, does not make him a bad person. I was driving down 126 yesterday just admiring the beauty of the countryside, when I realized I should be paying more attn to my driving. Then I came upon the accident scene.

Everyone needs to stop commenting on this unless you are strictly sending thoughts and prayers to the families of ALL involved. Stop posting opinion, stop jumping to conclusions, and most of all- stop placing the blame on any of the 4 individuals involved. This is fact: age does not affect driving abilities and none of us were there. I can't believe how judgmental some of you are. I'm a 21 year old from Plainfield myself, and can't believe what I'm seeing adults post about this issue. How do you know they were not distracted ?? Seriously. Accident ? YES, of course. But they are caused by something. I'm sure they were all GREAT kids. But someone is usually at fault. Not that it matters now, but let's try to be honest. Someone was at fault. Could have been a 3rd vehicle's fault, we don't know yet.

I'm tired of the crap im reading from all of you! I'm 19 and webt to school and knew all three of these teenagers and all three were great friends of mine and all you can do is try and determine who's fault it was?!! Its ridiculous! Have some heart for the family and friends! Its hard enough to know we're never going to see them again.

R.I.P I will miss you!

I tried as hard as I could to stay out of this, but I can't stand by and not defend them. I graduated with Tyler, and what some of you are saying about him and his friends is pretty disgusting for people that didn't even know them. All three were great kids, and it was an accident. To sit there and say that "it's because they were teenagers" or "they were probably texting and driving" is despicable. You have NO idea what happened. You were not there, and do not know who's fault this truly was. They may have pulled out in front of the semi, but what if he was going 75 mph in a 45? you do not know. You did not know any of them. Let me tell you, in my four years at high school at Plainfield North, the ONLY problems driving I ever had were with psycho parents rushing up the wrong side of the road to pick up their kids. Notice how "teens texting" was not the problem. Outside of high school, the idiot drivers that almost cause an accident with me on an everyday basis are not "teens texting," they are soccermoms and businessmen that think they are better than everyone else. Don't judge a book by its cover. Don't judge this situation because of their ages. Condolences for the 3's families and the truck driver.

Finally, Udo, you are an absolutely OUTRAGEOUS person. You have absolute ice water running through your veins, sir. You are spiteful, unhappy, and vindictive.

Rest in peace guys...just couldn't let people badmouth PNHS grads, especially people I knew.

RIP I will miss you three so much. I am truly disappointed in the ADULTS who comment on here trying to place blame. Have some sympathy and keep your gossipy habits to yourself. Why don't you act like an ADULT and have respect. Tyler, Alexis and Brian were taken too soon, too bad many use this as an outlet for their ageist comments and irrelevant comments. REST IN PEACE.

Folks, we were all young once. They call it an "accident" for a reason. This was a terrible one. My heart and prayers go out to all families involved, including the truck driver.

I went to school with Tyler's dad and my niece went to school with Mike's son and knew all three teens, My heart goes out to all involved... No one should ever feel the pain of loosing their children. My heart also goes out to the driver as I am sure he did all he could to avoid this tragedy!!

Someone needs to pull this thread off... It's not healthy. Leave the people alone. No matter what speed, no matter what happened, no matter what age, what happened -- happened.
Patch needs to pull this thread.

I completely agree. Can't the Patch make the decision to close off comments and not allow them? Andre?

I feel the Patch just draws out all those people who have no lives and sit home blogging and pass judgement on others. I met Brian once; he was a friend of my daughter and he made a long lasting impression on me. I let him and 2 of his friends into my home to visit my daughter and the 3 of them held out their hands to shake my hand as they introduced yourselves smiling and chatting while doing it to a mom they had never met before. I cannot ever imagine what this family and their friends are going through right now but I watch the pain that my daughter is in and it breaks my heart. They were supposed to hang out today and that will never come. Prayers for all involved directly and indirectly as there is no rhyme or reason for why this happened; accidents just happen.

Praying for all of the families involved. I taught all 3 students in middle school and all were great kids!

The development of self driving cars cannot come soon enough. I personally know of nobody under 20 who should really be driving, the capabilities and judgement can lead to a sudden wrong move and tragedy. One of Google's developers of the self driving vehicle mentioned that the reason he's working so hard on this is to save the lives of young drivers. My heart goes out to the families and friends of these children. Rest in Peace.

what about those over 60, delayed reactions, hitting the gas in place of the brake?

This technology will be for everyone. As well as saving lives, the fuel conservation of vehicles linked be computer would be huge. All ages, old, young, or simply those who don't like to drive. We're already seeing small advancments in current cars (parking assists, rear warning radar) this will progress.

As a 32 year old woman with small children I will one day have to worry about the decisions my children make when they are drivers. Anyone can be careless driving. It doesn't matter how old you are, no one is a perfect driver. I am disgusted by the comments on here placing blaming on 3 lost lives just 1 day after they were ripped from their parents lives. Have some compassion people. If the tables were turned you certainly would NOT want to hear the things you are posting about someone else's kids. Whether the teen driver or the truck driver was at fault, now is not the time to point fingers and be the rude, heartless humans you obviously are. Have some respect for lives that were lost & the parents & their loved ones reading this article.

Once we have the State Police report which determines the actual cause, it will be a teachable moment. That is why the cause is important. Not looking to blame anyone, but it was a beautiful sunny day. Weather was not a factor. Perhaps the truck was passing another vehicle, or the teen driver mis-judged the trucks speed or distance. Our brains are not perfect. Prayers to all, R.I.P. young lives.

I have no words for all the "haters" and ignorant chants of the "pukers" in these rants. These outrageous and NOT knowing anything about this tragic accident, are nothing but "pukers", have nothing more in their lives but puking and pointing fingers. NONE of this will bring these 3 wonderful young people back.
These 3 beautiful, loving, sweet, young people -- were who I adored and loved. Tyler was my step-son, Alexis was his girlfriend, Brian was his friend. 3 young people who were in college; everything ahead of them. 3 young people with goals, deams, and families who loved them deeply. I wish none of you to ever experience this split second in life; where your futures with your children NO matter what their ages are dissolved in a split second that cost them their lives. I have been given permission to speak for my husband, Tyler's Dad. AND YES, we do feel very deeply for the Truck Driver. Every life that Tyler, Alexis, Brian, and Scott touched are forever altered. This inter-section is one of the most deadliest in the county. My beautiful, talented step-son, his beautiful kind girlfriend, the beautiful young man Brian, and Scott; a man who was just doing his everyday job know this now all too well.
My familiy just wishes everyone to stop the puking and pointing fingers; look around you, love who you still have in your lives, and celebrate with love and compassion.

An unfortunate series of events. Before you know it they will have you turn 25 b4 you get a license, The way I see it it I think they should lower the driving are to 15 and make new cars more affordable.

Due to the unproductive, hurtful nature of some of the comments, we've decided to close this thread out of respect for the friends and families of the victims. We may reopen commenting at a later time. Let's all try to be compassionate and think of the families who are hurting.
