Teen Bicyclist Hit by Car in Boulder Hill
The teen was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where he was treated and released.
No charges will be filed after an accident in which a 13-year-old bicyclist was hit by a car on Ashlawn Avenue in Boulder Hill Tuesday night.
The incident happened at about 6:15 p.m. near the Civic Center pool, and the cyclist was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where he was treated and released.
“He rode out between two parked cars and was struck by another car going southbound,” Oswego Police spokesman Rob Sherwood said. “All witnesses said it was an unavoidable accident. It was just bad timing. The car and bicycle were at the same point at the same time. There’s a lot of activity up there with kids and cars.”
Police said no tickets were issued.

Ashlawn needs speed bumps, speed traps, crosswalks, or something cars race up and down this street constantly and its got not only two parks and a pool but a kindercare there needs to be something done by the city about this street!!!!

This was an accident. Sorry, but a 13-year old should know not to go into the street from in between cars. Accidents happen. I dont know the details of this particular accident, but even if the driver of the car is going 20 mph-bike loses!

While I agree there should probably be a crosswalk of some sort due to the activity around the area, this was a 13 year old who was perfectly capable of understanding that you should look both ways before crossing the street.

I truly believe that anywhere there is many kids, there will be accidents. All the precautions can be taken and there will still be one kiddo that jumps into oncoming traffic. Anyone behind the wheel needs to make sure they are going SLOWLY and to realize that kids are very unpredictable. Spoken from a mother of 2 VERY active boys:)

All of boulder hill has become the Autobahn! Oswego PD stays on the main roads that surround boulder hill and Kendall county patrols it, just not enough!!! Boulder hill has become ghetto!!! What a shame.

Because people speed in Boulder Hill speed--that makes it a Ghetto? Where's the reasoning in that. People don't speed in Oswego? People are just in too big of a hurry now days. Stopping at stop signs has become almost none existant. Running red I think are the biggest dangers--the light turns yellow and 5 cars race thru-the last 3 on red! A cross walk like they have at the bike trails would be a good idea at the Cvic Center.

A ghetto? Seriously? How ignorant are you? I've lived in Boulder Hill for almost 20 years and the main roads have always been like mini-raceways for people. However that isn't just a Boulder Hill thing...it's pretty much anywhere that people-young or old- drive. I do think that some of these roads, like Ashlawn do need speed bumps. There have been so many accidents on that road because people come flying around the curve, forgetting about the pool, park, and bike path.

Well...I disagree that ALL of Boulder Hill is a getto. There are some not so nice places in Oswego and Montgomery just like anywhere else. That being said, Boulder Hill is not within the municipal limits of Oswego or Montgomery it's unincorporated Kendall County and it's up to the Sheriff to patrol it along with the rest of Kendall County, I believe there is some agreement with both municipalities but I don't think they directly patrol the streets. Briarcliff and Circle Drive East are also raceways as is Aldon Road as it connects Rt.30 bypass to Rt 25. I have seen more sheriffs cars from time to time but unfortunately not consistently. I raised this issue with the schools several years ago when the subject to cutting buses and having kids walk was a topic. There was outrage that kids had to cross Mill Street in Fox Chase with only two way stops at Lynx and Mill. Meanwhile at Bereman and Circle Drive it's also only a two way stop with cars routinely 10 MPH or more over the limit and no one seemed to care. A dead kid is a dead kid regardless if perceived social standing or family income. Driving is getting worse and worse, people ride your tail and the faster you go, the closer they get.

The kids need to stop riding down the middle of the road at night. They treat the roads like a bike path.

I have to agree, Boulder Hill is far from being the ghetto. JimmyJ you hit it right on the head with Briarcliff, Bereman and Circle Drive East. Some drivers do the "touch and go" (tap brake) while other drivers just "slow down" without ever stopping. For years these roads have become a speedway making it unsafe and very hard for a kid to walk across these streets.

You are missing the point. "He rode out between two parked cars and was struck by another car going southbound,” Had the child been more sensable in riding a bike in the street, this would not have happened. No where does it say the car was speeding, no ticket, no speed bumps needed. Common sense is needed. All the driving caution in the world does not make up for a kid not looking before he zooms out into the street with his bike from between two cars. Educate the kids in bike safety, take responsibility for your actions. Want a cross walk ? Get it funded & put in a crosswalk. Its time to teach people on bikes what a stop sign is also. Riding a bike is not a free pass to zipping all around. WE ALL need to pay attention and improve our rules of the road.

@TLC...you are correct the kid came out from between parked cars, if the person driving was even doing the posted speed limit it would have been unavoidable most likely. Given that, the other person said that Boulder Hill is a getto, there is no need to strike out against an entire subdivision for whatever reason that comment was made. I see plenty of kids riding down the middle of the road all over Oswego and Montgomery and if you pull along side and say something to them, you typically get the F word in return, my reply is always "do you kiss your mother with that mouth"

This accident sure seems like the fault of the kid. However, Kendall County & Oswego police really don't enforce the traffic laws with respect to the obligations of drivers. I've ridden thousands of miles in Kendall County over the years and can tell you that it is impossible for a cyclist to stay on the road where legally allowed; you'll get killed unless you finally get smart enough to realize that it's a free for all on the roads and following the laws as a cyclist is not a smart thing to do.
Motorists are supposed to pass the cyclist with 3' of clearance which is ridiculously close on country roads where the motorist might be driving at 60mph. They are also supposed to slow down and most don't even do that. You'll find plenty of reports of cyclists getting killed in Kendall County, yet no reports of motorists actually getting ticketed for failing to respect the rights of cyclists. Fact is, I can have any police follow me and I can point out a few hundred violations of motorist's laws in about an hour.

Oh Gosh Pat.....I gotta tell ya there are plenty of times and I drive local roads about 100 miles a day 6 days a week and there are plenty of silly and stupid things on both the part of drivers and cyclists. How about the group of 20 cycles in Glen Ellyn riding three abreast and then suddenly all pulling over in front of me to make a left turn, no hand signal, no nothing. if you ride in the street you are supposed to abide by the rules of the road including stopping at red lights. It's literally a two way street and while a car driver is supposed to do certain things, why as a cyclist would you take a chance that the driver will.

I certainly don't support cyclists who do stupid things, but you've obviously never ridden a bicyle long distances on the road, or else you'd realize that by following the traffic laws that you'll likely get killed. I can easily show you more drivers who are dangerous to cyclists than vice versa.
Wish respect to left turns, do you really think that cars are going to wait for a cyclist in the left turn lane to put his toe clips on and accelerate up to speed before honking the horn and being agressive towards him? That's why smart cyclists stay on the right side of the road and make a left turn that unfortunately crosses traffic. Staying in the left turn for too long will get you run over.
Same with red lights. It only takes a few times of having cars try to push you through an intersection once the light turns green before you realize that it's safer to run the red light and stay ahead of the traffic.
Drivers are so aggressive towards cyclists that cyclists eventually learn that the traffic laws will get them killed. Hence, they ride in a way that is safest for them.
ILL cycling laws are stupid too. They require a cyclist to ride on the right side of the road as far over as practical but allow them to move left in order to avoid an obstacle. You tell me, what is supposed to happen when I come upon an obstacle? Do you really think I'd still be alive by moving to the left in front of traffic like I'm allowed to do?

Yes, why are there laws?! We should all just do what we think is safest for us! lol

I did not say what you are insinuating. I specifically talked about laws that pertained to riding a bicycle. Furthermore, I gave examples of why it is a bad idea to follow those laws.
Feel free to ride your bicyle during rush hour and take over the left turn lane like the law says you have a right to. And be sure to take your hand off your brake because you are suppose to lift your hand in the air to signal a turn. That's left over from when bicycles had coaster brakes. Let me know how that works out for you.
