Three Hospitalized in Route 30 Crash

An 18-year-old Montgomery woman was taken by emergency helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

A Sunday morning accident at Route 30 and Douglas Road in Oswego sent three people to area hospitals, according to Oswego police.

Two cars, one driven by James Biever, 50, of Big Rock and the other by Anthony Halstead, 19, of Oswego, collided near the intersection at about 9:30 a.m. Both drivers were ticketed with failure to yield to avoid an accident, police said.

Halstead was taken by Oswego Fire Protection District personell to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, and a passenger in his car, Amber Davis, 18, of Montgomery, was taken by emergency helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, police said. Biever was not hospitalized.

A driver of a third vehicle, which was struck after the initial accident, Ariana Stone, 18, of Aurora also was taken to Rush-Copley, police said.

Condition reports were not available on the three late Sunday night.

Traffic in the area was rerouted for several hours Sunday.

Check Patch later as more information becomes available.

We need to push for road widening. Too many accidents at this location.

The state has plans and a timeline to widen that stretch of 30 from 34 to Douglas, if I recall from when it came up in the school boundary discussions the project should be starting fairly soon, it will take two constructions seasons to complete as well if I am remembering right.

You don't need road widening, people need to control there tempers and have paitience when driving. This accident was totally avoidable!

I totally feel for those involved in this accident. Patience while driving seems like a lost art in our area. I drive constantly as part of my job and the total lack of courtesy, lack of signaling and the mentality that "I am" the most important car on the road attitude along with the texting, cell phone usage, food eating and other distractions makes me wonder how we don't even have more accidents.

The younger drivers total lack of experience combined with their "all knowing" attitude is a lethal combination. It's part of being young but unfortunate when their attitude that it "won't happen to me" is causing a lot of trajedy! May these last accidents be examples to the rest of us that we must be on our best driving behaviour to allow all of us to enjoy the summer and the rest of the year. A couple of seconds or minutes in the long run is a small price to pay to be alive.

Whether or not the accident was avoidable is irrelevant at this point. People are in the hospitak trying to survive & it doesn't matter either way how or why this happened because the fact of the matter is.. it did. Rt. 30 has proven itself to be dangerous with the countless other accidents that have happened there. Quit playing the blame game, it's pointless.

I agree no need to widen the road. People need to be more cautious when driving this busy road. I live right by this intersection, and her seen/heard of way too many accidents lately.

I disagree. The roads in the area do need to be widened. Many of the roads are two lane roads with one lane in each direction. If the roads were four lanes the slow drivers can stay in the right lane.

Kids are out of school. Very young drivers are everywhere, in a hurry, drinking their slurpies, on the phone and texting. Unfortunately, that won't change, no matter how many laws are in effect. We all have to talk to our own children about these things. We all have to triple check ourselves when driving. Our attitudes, our urgency........What could be so important that lives are taken or damaged forever. Two days in a row last week I came upon horrible accidents on my way home. One on Eldemain and one on Jericho and that was right after the Route 126 accident that took 3 young lives. Please slow down everyone........Nothing is worth this.

My heart goes out to all these families.

It's not the road itself that is dangerous, it is the people who are driving. I cannot tell you how many countless times I see people pull out in front of someone doing 50 miles an hour or how many times recently I have seen people running red lights.
It sounds as though these people driving were the cause of the accident because they were both ticketed.
I hope that all involved will fully recover from their injuries.

Naomi I am in total agreement with you. Regardless of age, there are too many people doing just what you said and also blowing/rolling through stop signs also. Everyones attention needs to be on what's surrouding vehicle, nothing else. It only takes a split second for your eyes to be off the road and into a head on collision. We all need to wake up and PAY ATTENTION to nothing else but the task at hand: DRIVING ! Prayers to in injured and their families.

Who says anyone was texting, putting on make-up, drinking a slurpee or otherwise??? That merge is dangerous. Accidents happen. I am disgusted that anyone would just assume that the younger drivers were being negligent. People were injured...badly. Isn't that enough? Or does it make those of you blaming without facts feel superior to belittle others...now who has an "all knowing" attitude? How about just some prayers and good thoughts to those involved? Amber is one of my daughter's closest friends and we are all beside ourselves with worry. It seems to me that anytime there is a tragedy in this community, so many people use this forum (among others) to tear each other apart and blame. Its relentless! I am sure the victims families would appreciate their "community" rallying around them as opposed to this ridiculousness. I truly hope none of YOU ever make a mistake in your lives... God knows what the people on Oswego Patch will say about YOU!

This isn't blaming anyone it's knowin the facts about what happined, oh course we all feel sorry for this accident that happined and the families of all involved but it needs (not that it's a good thing) to be an example for EVERYONE to be cautious, slow down be polite and drive smart.
I wrote the true facts about what really happined but the wonderful editors at the patch removed them, so until the "official cause" comes out I wish all hurt parties involved A speedy recovery.

How can you know "facts" unless you were in all the cars at the same time? Please. I was at the stop light at the car dealership and watched it happen. I also happen to know Amber and Anthony, who were in the car together. In case you were wondering- Amber is making miraculous progression and Anthony got to go home.
The situation is this- The road merges and the drivers that were cited in the accident were driving aggressively, rather than defensively. But it had nothing to do with age, obviously, since one driver was a teen and the other was well into adulthood.
That whole stretch of Route 30, from 34 all the way to orchard road is dangerous. It goes from 2 lanes, to 1 lane, back to 2 lanes, and then 1 lane in very short increments. Someone always left just five minutes late, someone else spilled their hot coffee, and some one else is looking at their phone.
You're not a detective and you weren't some magical genie in all the cars at once. You weren't there. Show some respect.

HMMM...there is more to this accident than meets the eye. It was a game of chicken to see who could merge first. The older driver should have known better. His total lack of concern for clipping the car and sending it spinning out of control disgust me!

That corner isnt dangerous i am at that corner everday turning off of douglas to go west on 30 and i have waited and the light will be yellow and instead of slowing down people will try to beat it and it will be red once they go through. If i was assuming they were going to stop i would have been one of those accidents. People need to slow down and just stop when we r suppose to same with stop signs they arent yield signs they are red and say stop for a reason. A father of 2 was just recently killed because the driver is trying to beat the cars going 60 miles an hour on 30 and they are pulling put of a subdivision at the last minute thinking that they can stop on a dime. I am aware that this happens often and am always prepared but for those not familiar with this area or are more trusting will get into an accident. Where are the cops when u need them?

Next time you go somewhere at night .....inclusive of I88.......Notice all the blue glowing faces you see so attentive to thier social lives, and not the lives of others. The same people who do 90 and then 40 all within 3 miles.

I wish I could give tickets myself. It's disgusting how stupid people have become.

Interesting can Oswego accomadate the growth in this community?
There are not alot of street signs such as speed limits in the fairly new developed subdivisions and the ones that do exist are either covered by tree branches or posted higher than typical stop sign height. Perhaps a summer job for streets and sans can be to have a teenager locate all the signs and measure them and indicate if there is not a sign there there should be. Especially if you have some streets that are not managed by the village as in the Hometown subdivisions exchanges or underdeveloped subdivisions. Thats worth $17.00 an hour all summer long vs court costs, hospital costs and insurance costs.

It is so sad to come on here and see people blaming other people when there is a sister, friend, daughter, and mother of a baby girl fighting for her life. Give a little respect to the families. The 11 year old boy who just passed are you just going to blame the person driving for simply driving, or the concrete for being there. Accidents DO happen. I am a teenager and there has been plenty of times an ADULT has tried cutting me off, tailgated me, texted while driving, drinking a tea while driving, everyone does it not just teenagers. The point is, when something so tragic like this happens you pray for the families and friends who come on here and see this bull. Have some respect.

There is a cross on a particular road near my house. It has a picture of the woman who died and below her pic it says something like "push for the path" (I'm thinking bike path). I think showing the highest "respect" for life is doing what we can to spare future injuries and death. I don't see blame game, I see open discussion that could move toward solutions. We don't need The Patch to pray for those hurt. I did that as soon as I saw the helicopter on my way to church. But reading and commenting makes me feel like I'm hearing from and talking to my neighbors. Just my opinion.

I am Amber's mom, amd I am heartened that many people care about the welfare of my daughter. I am disheartened to see that many have said nothing about the friend she had with her and the other girl who (from what I understand was in the wrong place at the wrong time) are in the hospital as well. They both are just as important to thing senselessness as my Amber. Thank you for all the prayers that have come our way. They have made the doctors shake their heads in wonder at her progress already. Please don't fortget the other two also hurt. They are as deserving as Amber. I realize she has the worst injuries, but she is no different otherwise than the other two hurt by this.

While I agree with many sentiments listed here, I also agreet that no amount of snarking is going to change this particular instance. I'm slowly getting details as to what happened. It was a senseless thing, and there will be consequences, BUT just remember, this could have happened to ANYBODY.

Amber is doing very well, and is hanging in there. Her family has rallied around her, like the other families I am sure have gathered. Please just give up on theprayers just yet. They are doing their job.

If you have information, and you have not been reached by OPD, PLEASE call them and tell what you saw. They are still investigating this and will be for some time.

Speeding, texting, drinking drinks, age, and many other things listed here WILL contribute to accidents this year and many more years.

Common sense and simple courtesy cost absolutley nothing. Yet I see so little of it, especially on the roads.

If the road had been wider, there would still have been someone who thought they needed to go a little bit faster than everyone else. Distractions would still have happened. Things that are out of our control happen every day. Just love those around you, family or not, and realize that they are on this planet too. Your space has been carved out, but we should all give the same respect we expect from others. It really isn't hard.

the road in that area have large grooves in them from heavy trucks by both lights, farm&fleet and douglas. this needs to be fixed now. i have seen low cars like small hondas and corvettes scrape and make sparks from the ruts witch inturn make them have no control. i bet this is a cause for crashes in those areas too. if you dont have the money to rebuild them, then at least grind them down for now. my prayers to all of the victims that bad accident.
