Pedestrian Killed in Early Morning Collision on Rt. 71
Oswego police have confirmed that 22-year-old Garrett Riotte of Oswego was killed in a collision that involved two vehicles, and resulted in a drunken driving charge for one of the drivers.
An Oswego man was killed and another charged with drunken driving in an early morning accident on Route 71 Saturday, Oswego police said.
The collision occurred at 2:21 a.m. on the roadway north of the intersection of Route 71 and Forest Avenue, police said. According to Chief Dwight Baird, the accident involved two cars striking a pedestrian, identified as Garrett Riotte, 22, of the 300 block of Prairieview Court.
Riotte was walking in a dark area of the roadway when he was struck by an eastbound car driven by Thomas Schillinger, 22, of the 200 block of Morgan Valley Drive in Oswego, Baird said.
The impact tossed Riotte into the westbound lane, Baird said, and into the path of two oncoming cars. One swerved and avoided striking Riotte, but the other, a car driven by Christopher Nevin, 25, of the 500 block of Heritage Drive in Oswego, collided with him, Baird said.
Riotte was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where he later died, police said.
Nevin was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood alcohol content higher than .08, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Schillinger was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Portions of Route 71 were closed until around 10:30 a.m. The road has been reopened.
The crash remains under investigation, police said. The Oswego police were assisted by the Kendall County Sheriff’s Department, the Illinois State Police, the Oswego Fire Protection District and the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s office.
