Panera Bread Location Moving East

Eatery wants to feature drive-thru at new location.

The Oswego Village Board approved plans for the Oswego Panera Bread to move to a new location at the Jan. 8 board meeting with a unanimous vote.

The Panera Bread is currently situated in the Oswego Commons shopping center in the 2900 block of Route 34.

The new location at Gerry Centennial Plaza will require new construction and will be located in the 1400 block of Douglas Road, directly north of the Buffalo Wild Wings, according to a memo to the board from Village planner Kasey Evans.

Panera plans to move to the new location so that a drive-thru will be available to customers.

The new restaurant will be housed in a just under 11,000-foot three-unit retail building. The other units will be for a potential laundromat with a valet service and an additional retail space.

Panera has operated from the Oswego Commons Shopping Center location since 2002.

Do we really need a drive thru at Panera? I love the location it's at now. It's more congested just one block down. It doesn't hurt if people get out of their cars to get their food.

Necessary? Probably not. More convenient and more likely for Panera to profit? Absolutely. For moms like myself who have babies in the car and are just looking for lunch or dinner to take home, it's a pain to have to drag your kids inside. We go out of our way to find places with a drive-thru.

Right you are Laura! I rarely go there now with my 1 year old, opting for the drive- thru convenience...and I miss it!

HEY, Laura, here's something that was just invented, it's called a stove & an oven!
Learn it, try it, LOVE it, it's your friend (and a lot cheaper)

How is it more convenient when you have to wait 15 minutes in your car in a drive thru lane to get your food?

When we lived in the STL suburbs, our Panera there had a drive thru and the convenience of it was great! While it's not a necessity, I know the ease of being able to just drive in and out will bring me back more often! I like the "healthy" drive thru option and think it will benefit busy families! If they make more profit from it, too, all the better for our local businesses in Oswego!

Yea for the drive through, once they move I will visit Panera more often along with many of my friends. I would also love a drive through Pot Bellys like in Lombard . Healthy fast food, this is great!! And with a Large Family, I am thrilled to have a drive through for Healthy food when we are too tired to cook.

When I read comments in reference to this I think to myself - "Good Lord, how many times a week are people going out for fast food that someone will drive out of their way to seek it out?"

I don't think you have to go out for fast food much at all to appreciate this..It's a nice choice to have if you only go out even once a month. If I'm driving home and want to pick something up, I now have a "healthier" option than some of the other places with drive throughs. It's fine to go in and order, but sometimes a drive through is just convenient at the time and I think Panera will benefit greatly from this.

LOL - when I read comments like that I think to myself - "Why would anyone care how many times people are going out for fast food?"

I'm sure Panera will do well with a drive-thru. We generally dine-in, but there have definitely been times where we've picked up soup and salads for dinner and I'd welcome the chance to drive-thru instead of dragging hungry kids through the parking lot and into the store. Two of my kids love their salads and it's a pretty good deal when you have 2 little ones splitting it. Better than a Happy Meal. ;)

Can't see it being a very speedy operation around the busy dinner time. It's usually a fair few minutes to get your food inside on a normal day, pagers and all. Will it be like Culvers, where they bring it out to your car?
I can see it being useful in the morning though, for a cup of coffee and a bagel.

Have to agree, their drivethru will not be a speedy process @ dinner time or busy weekend mornings either, it's not like they're slapping burgers and chicken sandwiches together , they have varied menu, and realistically it will take more time.
I'll continue to go inside for my breakfast ( Tess and Rhonda do a great job ! ) and
for my dinners to go, at night. Bottom line is , it's all about maximizing profits any way a business thinks it can.

I don't get to go often because I hate having to bring my 2 yr old in with me! I am excited!

Glad to see a business thriving as opposed to closing in Oswego. I'm also glad that Panera will be easily accessible to the Churchill Club bike path and side walk access for foot traffic. It's a great destination spot for our kids and families to be able to walk to and grab a salad or a water bottle. The west location is inconvenient regardless of the drive through.

I still hear of people cutting back on the number of times they eat out in order to save money as they are still trying to recover. I'm glad we have so many wealthy people living in Oswego!
