District 308 Announces New Finance Advisory Committee
Finance committee is one of four committees that will be made up of parents, school officials and board members.
The finance and operations advisory committee will be the first of four advisory committees created in Oswego District 308, as announced Monday at the school board meeting.
Superintendent Matthew Wendt proposed the idea of different advisory committees back in October that would be made of a mix of parents, Oswego residents, staff members and board members. The goal of the committees was to provide an additional voice to the board and offer more in-depth discussion on a multitude of issues.
The 23 members of the finance advisory committee represent across the 68 square mile school district and consist of 14 residents both with and without children in the district, seven school district officials and two board members who will preside over the meetings, said Wendt.
Oswego 308 residents named to the committee include: Nicky Boecker, Chuck Brown, Laura Chamness, Keith Craven, Lauri Doyle, Rosa Gugliotta, Wayne Hershbeger, Lee Hoffer, Katra Knoernschild, Bill Lavine, Karen Novy, Gregory O’Neil, Jane Triska and Pranil Voidya.
School officials include: Terri Orr, secretary; Darla Medernach, teacher; Mike Wayne, principal; Phil Murray, principal; Sharon Hassberger, Director of Finance; Paul O'Malley, Assistant Superintendent; and Matthew Wendt, Superintendent.
Board members include: Brent Lightfoot and Mike Scaramuzzi, who will be co-chairs.
According to the advisory committee appointment process, members are appointed for two-year terms and may serve a maximum of six years. All advisory committee meetings are considered public meetings and the public may speak on any items listed on the agenda although only committee members may vote.
The finance and operations advisory committee’s duties include:
- Review all proposed board polies related to budget and financial maters recommending new policies as needed.
- Review and comment on the proposed school district’s annual budget.
- Review all budgets related to grants submitted and/or awarded.
- Assist in the planning and completing of the district’s management, financial and program audits.
- Review and comment on the district’s annual state audit; review any audit finds and recommend action plans.
- Review the strategic plan and financial implications to the school district’s budget.
- Review the school district’s budget, recommend adjustments and modifications to the school district’s budget.
- Analyze legislative proposals.
- Advise the Board in setting the annual property tax levy.
- Recommend cost effective and efficient projects and initiatives for the school board to consider.
- Review the school district’s operations budgets, short and long-range plans.
- Recommend financial and operations goals.
The committee will have its first meeting on Monday, Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the District Administration Center, 4175 Route 71. The committee will meet on the first Monday of each month in the future.
The three other committees, teaching and learning; policy development; and facilities and planning do not have any meetings scheduled at this time.
