No One Hurt in Late Afternoon Fire

No one was injured in a late-afternoon fire in the 800 block of Whitlock Ave. in Aurora on Thursday.

Firefighters from the Montgomery and Countryside Fire Protection District responded shortly after 4:50 p.m. to calls of a house fire. The blaze began in a back bedroom fireplace, according to fire officials. The home’s sole occupant at the time started a fire, and when it grew out of control, he tried to extinguish it himself, fire officials said.

When that failed, the man climbed out a back bedroom window. The house belongs to the man’s grandmother, fire officials said, although she was not home at the time. The man was not injured, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, officials said, but does not appear suspicious. More than $10,000 in damage was done to the home, officials said, rendering it uninhabitable. The investigation is ongoing, firefighters said.
