On Friday, 4th graders at Kaneland McDole Elementary School on Montgomery's west side participated in a first-of-its-kind event: a 50 states parade.

For the entire school year, 4th graders have been studying the states, and completing a massive picture book by researching each one. As a fun culmination of that project, students designed their own floats, each one representing a different state, and got to parade them around school grounds.

Parents stood along the parade route and clapped and took pictures. Students received a grade for their work, but were not judged against each other, according to teacher Anne Olsen.

And the students themselves took great pride in their work, showing off their floats to all who asked to see them. Olsen said the parade was a success, and would likely become a regular event at McDole Elementary.
