How would you like to get rid of some of your old stuff, and help preserve Settlers Cottage on River Street at the same time?

You’ll have that chance next month, as Montgomery kicks off its fifth annual community garage sale. On June 9, 10 and 11, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the village will turn into a massive market, and visitors will be able to get a guided tour of homes with bargains to peddle.

A rain date of June 16-18 has been set as well.

Last year, a total of 125 households participated in the garage sale, according to Debbie Buchanan, executive assistant to the village manager. The fee to join up this year is $10, and registration forms are available at Village Hall, 200 N. River Street, or online at the village website.

But you’d better hurry up if you want to be involved. The village takes out ads in community newspapers for the garage sale, and includes every house participating on a map that will be available both at Village Hall and online. If you want to be included in the advertising, the deadline is 4:30 p.m. on May 27.

The maps will be available starting June 6.

The community garage sale is sponsored by Montgomery’s historic preservation commission, and all money collected will go to preserving Settlers Cottage. The village’s oldest structure, Settlers Cottage was built around 1840 by Montgomery’s founder, Daniel Gray. It was slated for the wrecking ball in 2003, but a group of preservationists convinced the village to save it.

It now serves as a museum, and the historic preservation commission has been tasked with funding its upkeep and restoration.

Settlers Cottage will be open the second Tuesday and the third Sunday of each month this summer, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., as well as during Montgomery Fest, held during the second weekend in August.
