Feb. 8 is National Girl Scout Cookie Day

Girl Scouts across the country are busy selling cookies this winter.

Girl Scouts of the USA has declared Friday, Feb. 8, as the first-ever National Girl Scout Cookie Day! National Girl Scout Cookie Day highlights the 5 Skills Girl Scouts learn through the World’s Largest Girl-led Business – The Girl Scout Cookie Program. These skills include: Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management, People Skills and Business Ethics.

“Everyone knows how tasty Girl Scout Cookies are, but many customers don’t realize that they’re also helping girls build money management and people skills,” said Girl Scouts of the USA Chief Executive Officer Anna Maria Chavez. “The girl who sells you Thin Mints today may be running a business, reversing the deficit, and improving your community within a matter of years. Just ask our 59 million Girl Scout alumnae, including 70 percent of the women now serving as U.S. senators."

Cookie lovers and social media fans can also support National Girl Scout Cookie Day by tweeting their favorite Girl Scout Cookie using the hashtag, #onemorebox and be entered in a nationwide contest!

Local girls will join Girl Scouts across the nation as they ask over 50 million cookie fans to buy or order more boxes in honor of their success in running the largest girl-led business enterprise in the world. Find local Girl Scouts to purchase cookies from by using Cookie Finder.

As a former Girl Scout Leader, and and a mom of a Girl Scout, I must say that, while I'm glad there's a special day to draw attention to Girl Scout cookies, I've been quite surprised that the national leadership chose this date. After all, all the girls' cookie sale orders are required to be turned in by now, and our Council isn't allowed to sell extra boxes of cookies until much later, either. So people won't be able to order new cookies on this date, nor will they be able to pick up any extras. Rather bad timing, I must say. It would have been better to make it early in January, to better coincide with the national sales.

Still, you should feel REALLY good about buying these cookies from any young girl who comes to your door. In many Troops, almost all of their activities and events are paid for by fundraising profits, like cookies and Fall Product sales, and they help to keep membership dues to a minimum, so more girls can join. Because of the yearly schedule of Troop membership and activities, they only sell cookies in the bitter cold of January, so if you give them your phone number and promise to buy over the phone next year, they'll be very grateful!
