It was perfect weather Saturday for the Montgomery and Countryside Fire Protection District's annual open house, and families from Montgomery and beyond took advantage of it.

Hundreds trekked down to the department's station on Railroad Street for some free food (cooked up by firefighters) and tours of the facility. Kids got the chance to sit in a fire truck, aim a fire hose, and play in an inflatable bounce house.

But it wasn't all fun and games: firefighters were there to give tips on fire safety, and the Sandwich Fire Department brought down their mobile safety trailer, also known as a "smoke house." The trailer, mocked up inside to resemble a house, is equipped with a smoke generator, to simulate fire conditions. Kids learned not to leave a room if the door is hot, and to kneel down and crawl to escape smoke.
