District 308 Board to Choose New Superintendent Tonight

The search for a successor to Dan O'Donnell will likely conclude tonight, in a special meeting set for 7 p.m. at Oswego High School.

The search for a new superintendent for District 308 has been ongoing since March. Tonight, it’s likely to come to an end.

The Oswego School District Board has called a special meeting for tonight, and the agenda strongly indicates that a new superintendent will be announced by the end of the night. The one action item listed, in fact, is as follows: “The Board will approve the new superintendent’s contract.”

Board Member Mike Scaramuzzi confirmed Wednesday that the board has made its final decision on a superintendent. He said he was thrilled with the quality of the candidates brought forth by the district's search firm, Iowa-based Ray and Associates, and said the final two candidates, interviewed again at the end of May, presented board members with a difficult decision.

In the end, he said, a supermajority of board members all picked the same candidate.

"I'm really excited about starting to work with this gentleman," he said. "I think he's a perfect fit for this district, and a lot of his experiences will translate to what we're going through."

The search began in April, when about 500 district residents participated in forums and filled out surveys to tell Ray and Associates what kind of superintendent they were looking for. About 100 of those people attended focus groups, and gave input on the qualities of a successful superintendent for the district.

The firm put together a report based on the responses, and the board used that to direct their search. Scaramuzzi said that public input was very helpful, and the final 10 candidates were screened based on the criteria the public provided.

School board members conducted interviews with candidates in May, after news broke in April that the new superintendent would receive a salary in the range of $235,000 a year – up 17.5 percent from the $200,000 plus benefits O’Donnell received for the 2011-2012 school year. Scaramuzzi did not confirm the new superintendent's salary on Wednesday.

O’Donnell resigned in February, citing disagreements with the majority of school board members. His last day will be June 30.

The board is also seeking replacements for Assistant Superintendent Todd Colvin, who gave his notice in January; Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Marsha Hollis, who will retire at the end of the year; and principals for Thompson Junior High School, Long Beach Elementary School and Brokaw Early Learning Center.

The three current principals – Tracy Murphy, Kevin Lipke and Jeff Modaff, respectively – have accepted jobs in other districts.

Scaramuzzi said it was always the board's intention to choose a superintendent first, and involve the new district leader in the search for the other top administrators. Scaramuzzi said the board's choice for superintendent is excited to get to work, and may even become involved in choosing new administrators before his contract term begins.

"I hope he'll be here a long time, and he'll take us through a period of unprecedented growth," Scaramuzzi said.

Tonight’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Oswego High School’s community room, and is open to the public.

I think Paul probably meant that all we really know about the new superintendent is that it's a man.

I read Paul's comment the same way Robyn did. Mike Scaramuzzi actually laughed about that when he said "gentleman" to me. "I can tell you he's male," he said.

@arborville turf - in an economy where a good breeze can knock over a business,
more kids go without bus rides, and we have less teachers, I have to agree, giving some new guy a RAISE of close to 18 percent is definitely wrong. 40K would have went a long way to balance the budget. Who knows what they're going to do in the Principal searches ? Something didn't make sense to me. How did "Ray and Assoc." out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa come up with their numbers ? a posting of Trenton NJ schools 12,000 enrollment is getting $177,500 http://rayassoc.com/job-details.php?ID=137 while we foot the bill more than the 31,000 enrollment of Norfolk, Va compensation package: http://rayassoc.com/job-details.php?ID=136 of $225,000. Our 17,175 enrollment nets the guy $235,000. http://rayassoc.com/job-details.php?ID=144 . ??

Seems Just ludicrous for someone to make that kind of money just to run a school district. But some of them got voted in on the reform the board spending change promise, so it looks like they made good on their promise when they ran for the school board. Brilliant

It's not just total school population that determines the salary. It's also the desirability of the area. Many of the larger school districts that are similar in size to Oswego are located in denser suburban or urban areas. Oswego is more attractive from a housing and demographic point of view and that should be used when bargaining the salary.

I have no idea why Ray & Assoc are still being used based upon their previous recommendations.

Exactly Mike. We are not the North Shore but have chosen to pay the new finance guy like we are. With the pension contribution he has to right around $200k. Sure the guy's contract tonight will be sweet as well. The districts around here don't pay anywhere near that level and 308 administrators in general I don't think are paid that high either. This is just the kind of ammo the teachers union loves. Good luck negotiating. We probably will see huge raises there too. Everybody that leaves will probably get a more expensive replacement. Whatever happened to internal talent? It's usually always cheaper. Not sure how you run as fiscal conservatives and then betray us like this.

Anyone taking odds it's someone that's already collecting a pension from another state?

You called it - another out-of-state person. Not to mention, this guy's from Iowa, and so is Ray and Associates.

Wendt is not from Iowa. He was an out-of-stater from a Kansas school district in 2007. That was not an issue back then, where he came from. Now, he is moving East again. Hopefully he is given the chance in Oswego that his prior district did, however his tenure there is turning out now.

I understand, Mike, and both of those places are "cities", which should put them into a higher pay grade than us to begin with.

Wonder if part of his new job description is monitoring the on/off button on the tape recorder? Should get an annual bonus just for that.

Sounds like he gets a nice deal on the way out, too. Brace yourself, Dr. Wendt. There is a lot of work to be done!

You're on top of it, Jane! Board approved 6-0 a contract with Matthew Wendt to be the new superintendent. He'll get a base salary of $225,000. Brent Lightfoot was absent, but wrote a letter in support. Alison Swanson voted yes, but expressed reservations about the salary. Full story shortly.

Something is wrong with Wendt. The Ankeny board in Iowa is paying him $176,513 plus benefits to go away. Of course, any knucklehead would take that if he could secure the same job elsewhere. Additionally, I heard Paul O'Malley's contract at Niles wasn't going to be renewed anyway. So, our top two administrators are rejects from other districts...and highly paid I might add.

@Amy...The article I read about his leaving Ankeny did not imply they were sending him away. He resigned Wednesday and it was a surprise to the District. They weren't planning on his leaving.

Agreed Lisa. The article I read stated that they offered him an increase to stay for three more years, and a transition allowance if he left. They stated that it was well earned, and added that they anticipate that he will assist them during their transition. I'm not sure what, if any, impact that will have on his responsibilities here. However, I will state that I'm very impressed with what I have read on him thus far, and my first impression on meeting him.
