District 308 Board Interviewing Final Superintendent Candidates This Week
Meetings moved from Naperville restaurant to Oswego High School.
After canceling out-of-district meetings last week to interview the two final candidates to replace outgoing Superintendent Dan O’Donnell, the District 308 board will meet with the candidates Tuesday and Wednesday night at Oswego High School.
Board President Bill Walsh revealed at Monday night’s regular board meeting that 221 candidates from 36 states showed interest in the position through the district’s search firm Ray and Associates. Of those 221, 60 from 22 states applied. Ray and Associates brought the board 10 of those candidates.
Walsh said the board then narrowed that field to six and interviewed them earlier this month in closed session. Those six were then narrowed to the final two. Tuesday night's meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday's will be held at 7 p.m. in the OHS community room.
The board is quickly running out of time to fill the position, as O’Donnell’s last day on the job will be June 30.
The board canceled last week’s final interviews at Biaggi’s Italian restaurant in Naperville after constituents expressed displeasure with the board for planning meetings outside the district.

So, are the final 2 playing the "Let's retire and change states!" game that is so among "retired" district-level administrators? It's too bad that the system can't be changed to minimize that. I know current administrators who are gleefully awaiting the day that they can start playing that game. It's funny because the rules are quite different for retired teachers.
I hope they find a good match for the D308. The new leader shall certainly have his or her hands full!

I'm still puzzled about the week long delay. If they only needed to change the venue, why couldn't they just contact the interviewees to tell them that instead of a flashy restaurant, the interviews would be conducted at OHS - same day, same time?

What the heck does it matter? It's a week later! Big deal!

I hope the new candidate brings some fresh new ideas and enthusiasum. I don't want to see a lazy retiree sit back and enjoy the hefty paycheck without lifting a finger! Our district has so much potential that its crucial we get the right people in charge. Oswego east needs major reform. Hunt club is a leader in this district and all the other schools need to follow suit. More educational, arts, language, and music programs should be made available. It is unfair that some students are being offered dual language while other kids in the district are not.

That candidate pipeline sounds just about right. I wonder if the ever so lazy 'Ray and Associates' actually cold-sourced any of those candidates. It's very likely that instead they utilized the typical agency / contingency firm approach of 'Post and Pray'. Agency and Contingency Recruiters are lazy sacks of... This coming from a Corporate Recruiter that has had much experience working with 'their kind'. I'm not commission; I'm not the car salesman of the Talent Acquisition profession.
Ever wonder how much Ray and Associates is raking in for their 'find'? Industry average is 20% (and that's relatively low). Tack that on top of the fat check the Super will make each pay period as well as benefits and payroll taxes. The district is getting screwed and they're too stupid to realize it. It's sad when any organization fails to utilize the talent of their HR team. In this case the districts HR team is also as pathetic as Ray and Associates. Why would you sit in your office managing only employee relations issues all day and purposely ignore the other half of your role - Talent Acquisition?!
I feel bad for the people that have their kids going through this system right now; the leadership of the district is exemplifying the typical traits of most failing organizations... laziness.

Jean, actually right after I posted that, I realized why they had to delay. Because they need to post a pulic announcement of a meeting 48 hours in advance, so if they changed the location they needed to cancel and re-post for a new meeting.
But to answer your question ;what does it matter?" It matters because here we are in mid/late May to fill a position that needs someone in place by the end of June. The simple fact that it's only happening now is bad enough, but any delay at all is unnecessary and potentially harmful to the whole process.

I hope the candidates are new ones and not just a rehash of previous candidates or previous district employees who couldn't make it before, left (or were fired), and are now trying to come back. We need a fresh perspective, not a yes person for either side (for the board or the administration). I am hopeful...

With the substantial interest in this position from applicants, it shouldn't be necessary to pay a huge salary.

Agreed, by all means, let's get the lowest paid person we can find.

Peanuts?? No, let's once again blow a lot of money on an ineffective superintendent. Shall we pay the new guy $300,000+? Will that guarantee that we finally get a decent leader?
