Candidate Packets for Oswego 308 Board of Education Election Now Available

Be aware of important dates for candidates, listed at the bottom.

Four seats on the seven-member Oswego Community Unit School District (OCUSD) 308 Board of Education will be filled following the election to be held on April 9, 2013.

Candidate packets, including nominating petition forms, will be available to be picked up at the District Administration Center, 4175 Route 71 on Monday, September 24, and on any business day following between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Candidates may begin circulating nominating petitions for signatures no earlier than September 25, 2012. A candidate’s nominating papers must be filed at the District Administration Center no earlier than 8:00 a.m. on Monday, December 17, 2012 and no later than Monday, December 24, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.

Nominating papers may be filed by the candidate in person, by mail, or by an agent.

The four elected candidates will serve four-year terms expiring in April 2017. To be eligible to serve, a School Board member must be, on the date of the election, a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old, a registered voter, and a resident of the State of Illinois and of the OCUSD 308 or at least one year immediately preceding the election.

Elections are nonpartisan and board candidates do not indicate a political party affiliation. Candidates should be aware of financial conflict-of-interests limitations set forth in State law.

The number of school board members who can be elected from anyone of the congressional townships is limited to three, unless voters have previously approved a proposition to have ‘at large’ representation through the District.

Currently, three school board members whose terms do not expire until 2015 reside within Oswego Township, T37N R8E. No additional school board members may be elected from Oswego Township, T37N R8E, at the April 9, 2013 election unless ‘at large’ representation has been approved at a past election.

Important dates for the candidates are:

This is going to entertaining....

It will be interesting to see if there are candidates coming out of the subdivisions who were not happy with the way the border changes played out.

It would be lovely if they had some qualifications to serve, rather than anger as a motivation.

Anger is always going to be motivation. The board we have now is a result of people being angry about the 3rd high school.

@Henry T - lol! I would venture to guess that a large percentage of people who seek public office, at any level, do so out of frustration, dissatisfaction or even anger. Heaven knows, we have plenty of all three here in D308!

The bigger challenge is getting people to actually vote instead of limiting their participation in the process to complaining.

I wonder how many folks will sign up. With all the comments on the boards lately against and for the Board, the ballot will be a book just for the 308 Board.

It seems there is a limitation according to the story so the four candidates have to come from areas other than Oswego Township is that correct? If so that means people from the Aurora and Plainfield sections are going to have to put their money where their mouth is. As to "qualifications" unfortunately the voters get to determine who they feel is qualified with their votes. There is unfortunately no requirement that a person have any actual knowledge of multi million dollar budgets, management, etc. THAT is part of how we got to where we are. It takes well meaning people, but then they have to reply too much on the experts they end up rubber stamping everything.
